Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a debilitating, biochemically driven disorder of the brain. It typically occurs in late adolescence and early adulthood. A person with schizophrenia may suffer from delusions or hallucinations.  These symptoms are usually very disturbing to the individual, and can lead to fearfulness and withdrawal.  Schizophrenia effects both men and women in equal numbers. It is a chronic disease that lasts a lifetime.

With proper care, a person suffering from schizophrenia may be able to work or attend school on a competitive basis.  On the other hand, it is common for a person to experience relapses that may require adjustment of medication or hospitalization.

Treatment for schizophrenia includes medication, usually given under the care of a psychiatrist. Supportive counseling is also indicated to help an individual learn to cope with the disease, including learning life skills and vocational support. Family counseling can help parents and siblings learn to cope with symptoms of the disease, while encouraging establishment of a strong family support network for the individual.
