Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. Also known as "manic-depressive" disorder, it is characterized by sudden and unpredictable mood swings.  The mood swings may tend more towards a manic phase, a depressive phase, or rapidly cycle between both.  Bipolar disorder often goes undiagnosed, as features of the disorder are often seen as normal (but hard to deal with) personality characteristics.

During the depressive phase, a person presents symptoms typical of depression, including hopelessness, lack of energy, sleep interruption, difficulty completing tasks, possible suicidal ideation, and a pervasive sense of sadness.  The manic phase is characterized by poor judgment, impulsivity, little sleep, irritability, spending sprees, euphoria, increased sexual activity, and a sense of power and "being in control."

Treatment of bipolar disorder involves medication to manage the mood swings, and supportive counseling to help a person manage the "triggers" for their behavior.  It is our experience that good psychiatric care is essential. Family counseling is often importance to help a person develop a strong support system. Properly managed, a person with bipolar disorder can lead a fulfilling life.
