Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

This disorder involves difficulties in focusing attention, particularly with academic or work tasks.  It is frequently diagnosed in the early grades of elementary school.  An individual with ADD may also experience excessive physical hyperactivity where one is fidgety or "always on the move." ADHD is more common in boys than girls.  Approximately half of children with ADHD continue to present symptoms as adults.

The preferred course of treatment involves an initial assessment to confirm the diagnosis, evaluation for medication, and supportive counseling to help an individual monitor and manage their symptoms. Properly treated, ADHD can be successfully managed. Individuals with ADHD are often stimulating in their interests, and frequently take on leadership roles as adults or become successful entrepreneurs.
