Depression
Depression is a common behavioral problem, effecting
about one out of ten Americans. Many people do not seek treatment for
depression. Major depression is the most severe form of
depression. Dysthymia is a milder, pervasive form of depression.
Bipolar disorder is less common, and includes the added feature of a
manic phase.
Although symptoms vary, common signs of depression
include hopelessness, loss of appetite, sleep interruption, suicidal
ideation, difficulty completing tasks, fatigue, feelings of guilt,
irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Depression may have its
roots in a persons biochemical make-up or situational factors.
Treatment for depression should include evaluation for
medication, and supportive therapy to learn effective ways to deal with
life's problems.
