Anxiety & Panic Disorders

Anxiety is a very common problem effecting about 1 out 10 Americans.  Although there are many different forms of anxiety, the underlying thread is an irrational sense of fear or worry.  Anxiety is distressing because the symptoms promote even more worry and fear.  The emotional strain can be immense, and is typically complicated by physical symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, excessive sweating, heart palpitations or rapid heart rate, nausea and more.

Major anxiety disorders include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobias and generalized anxiety disorder. Panic disorder is characterized by dramatic physical symptoms, including heart pain, faintness, and a fear of dying. OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) is characterized by rituals (such as repeated hand washing or checking that the door is locked).  PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is characterized by fears prompted by a traumatic act, such as sexual abuse or accident.  Social phobias include panic associated with crowds or leaving the house. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by a constant sense of worry or fear that never seems to leave.

Treatment for anxiety disorders includes evaluation for medication and counseling.  Most people respond well to professional care, and are able to resume productive lives.
